One of the biggest dangers of unauthorised scrap facilities is assuming that your vehicle has been properly deregistered just because it was collected, paid for or your thumbprint was taken.
A thumbprint is only part of the verification process. It does not prove that JPJ successfully cancelled the vehicle’s registration.
Before considering the matter complete, ask:
- Did you receive the official JPJK1D or Surat Pembatalan Pendaftaran Kenderaan?
- Are the registration number, chassis number and owner’s details correct?
- Have you checked MyJPJ to confirm that the vehicle is no longer actively listed under your name?
- Did you receive a Certificate of Destruction (COD)?
If the status remains unclear, verify it directly with JPJ.
Why an unlicensed scrap yard is risky
An unauthorised operator may dismantle the vehicle without completing its JPJ vehicle deregistration. A receipt, payment or towing photograph only proves that the vehicle was handed over—not that its registration was cancelled.
JPJ explains that cancellation of registration ends the vehicle’s active registration and restricts further transactions involving it.
The vehicle’s chassis, engine, registration plates and documents also remain physically identifiable. If these fall into the wrong hands, they may be misused.
A DOE-licensed Authorised Automotive Treatment Facility (AATF) provides controlled vehicle treatment and separates relevant components for reuse, recycling, recovery or final disposal.
Protect yourself
Follow the complete process:
Complete JPJ vehicle deregistration
→ Receive and check your JPJK1D
→ Hand the vehicle directly to a licensed AATF
→ Keep your Certificate of Destruction
Do not rely on a thumbprint or verbal promise. Keep official proof of both vehicle deregistration and physical disposal.
