Frequently Asked Questions

General

Why should we dispose of our cars at AATF?

It is important that scrap vehicles are disposed of through methods that minimize pollution risks because vehicles contain various potentially harmful substances. If scrap vehicles are not managed correctly, it will generate tons of waste that will harm the environment and ultimately, human health. Remember, there is no such thing as “away”. When you throw something, it must go somewhere.

Car Medic provides you with solutions to dispose of your vehicle in a way that is as environmentally friendly as possible.

Can I scrap my car with outstanding finance?

To put it simply, no: any car that has outstanding finances would still belong to the financial lenders, meaning, all outstanding loans have to be paid before the deregistration process can take place. It’s advisable for clients to pay up any outstanding loans before going to the nearest JPJ branch to deregister your car.

Can someone scrap my car without my permission?

Not to worry, cars will only be scrapped if they have been officially deregistered. Therefore, cars cannot be scrapped without your permission, unless there is express authorisation for them to do so on your behalf!

Therefore, cars cannot be scrapped without your permission, unless you have given the authorisation to someone else to help scrap your car on your behalf. We can provide you with the authorisation letter format for such situations to simplify the process for you! 😀

If you wish to do that, simply let us know and we will provide you with the authorisation letter format. This letter will be attached when you fill in a form to apply to scrap your car with us!

As long as they are deregistered.

What can't be in the car?

The scrapping process involves heavy and precise use of machinery, which is why there are lists of prohibited items to ensure the overall safety of faculty: drugs, alcohol, firearms, weapons, and/or items that are either flammable, explosive, corrosive, toxic or radioactive.

Can you collect my car if it is full of rubbish

Any time spent cleaning litter or troublesome material from the machinery would slow down the overall operation process. Thus, we ask that clients try to keep the cars free from rubbish, food wrappers and cans as a whole.

If you find that your vehicle is in a bad condition and you are unsure whether or not we will accept it, the answer to you is yes, we will.

Please get in touch and we will assist you fully in your vehicle scrapping process.

I have personal items left in the car, what should I do?

Before we tow or you drop off your vehicle at our facility, please ensure your car is free from personal items in all compartments.

We will not be responsible for any lost or damaged personal items once the vehicle is handed to us.

What is an End-of-Life Vehicle?

Like all things, vehicles come to the end of its useful due to several reasons – wear and tear, technical obsolescence, or when you have driven the car for decades and it’s starting to cost you more value (constant repairs) than you’re receiving from it.

Vehicles that have been damaged due to accident, fire, flood or is beyond economical repair are also End-Of-Life Vehicles.

There is actually no fixed definition on what determines an ELV. An ELV is one when the vehicle owner decides so and wishes to dispose of it.

When vehicles are no longer suitable for use, they are called end-of-life vehicles (ELVs), and ELVs must be recycled at authorised automotive treatment facilities.

What is a COD or Certficate of Destruction?

The COD is a important document that proves a few things:

  • that your scrap vehicle has reached the end of its useful life
  • has been disposed of appropriately and in an environmentally friendly way
  • will not be on-the-road ( this prevents risk for situations such as summons/car cloning/ criminal cases in which your vehicle identity is illegally used by others, etc.)

This is a complete certification that verifies how AATFs scrap every car thoroughly. The certificate is also distributed as a token of appreciation to every owner who chose the most environmentally-responsible way to part with their car.

Only AATFs are legally allowed to issue Certificate of Destruction for scrap vehicles. For all scrapped vehicle, we secure a proper record of all vehicles disposed at Car Medic.

Do I need to deregister my car at JPJ when I scrap my car?

Yes – it is important that you inform Jabatan Pengankutan Jalanraya when you scrap your car, as you could be liable for any on-going charges relating to your car if you don’t.

In fact, deregistering your car at JPJ is the first step you need to take when you scrap your car. See How It Works here.

Still unsure about the process? No worries, give us an enquiry and we will assist you.

What happens if I don’t deregister my car at JPJ?

It is important to inform JPJ that you would like to cancel your ownership i.e. deregister your vehicle before you scrap your vehicle.

Not informing JPJ that your vehicle has been scrapped may lead to more serious consequences than a fine penalty, as you might be at risk for situations such as car cloning/ criminal cases in which your vehicle number is used by others, etc.

Disposal Process

What happens to scrap cars(SW422)?

When your scrap vehicle is sent to an automotive treatment facility, it will be taken through numerous depollution and dismantling process, in compliance with the guidelines from the Department of Environment, Malaysia.

When the official paperwork to scrap a car has been handled, our recycling team at our AATF must depollute the car. This is to ensure that all hazardous substances are extracted from the vehicle so that vehicles are safe to be dismantled and will not pose pollution risks.

During depollution, we remove the following vehicles:

  • Fuel
  • Car battery
  • Oils- including gear box, engine, transmission, hydraulic, lubricating oils
  • Refrigerant- CFC and HCFC
  • Coolant
  • Oil filters
  • Wheels, tyres
  • Parts containing explosive materials- airbags and seatbelt tensions

When these materials are liquids have been removed, the scrap vehicle will proceed to dismantling process– an equally important step to recycle cars the right way.

Even though scrap vehicles have reached the end of its useful life, there are many spare parts and car components that can be reused and recycled. The dismantling process is where our recyclers will carefully disassemble parts that are in well-functioning conditions. These parts are called green parts and will be catalogued for future reuse.

Throughout the depollution and dismantling process, every scrap car and materials extracted will be thoroughly inspected for operators’ safety and product quality check purposes. When we extract each material, our recycling team will safely handle and store parts/ waste removed from the vehicle according to DOE guidelines and our continuously revised practices in our experience.

In the end of the disposal process, the car will then be salvaged and separated into plastics, fibre and metal, and fully recycled.
The hazardous waste/scheduled waste wil be delivered to and received by DOE licensed premises for treatment, disposal or recovery.

At Car Medic AATF, every single move in every procedure is carefully monitored and that is why you’re in safe hands when you recycle with us.

To recycle with AATF is the correct way to get rid of abandoned or end-of-life vehicles (ELVs) properly.

We are a licensed facility by the Department of Environment Malaysia (DOE) to dispose of vehicles the right way for the society.

As an AATF, we issue a Certifcate of Destruction, an important document that verifies complete destruction of a vehicle at our facility. View What is a Certifcat eof Destruction?

What are hazardous substances found in vehicles?

  • Oils- including gear box, engine, transmission, hydraulic, lubricating oils
  • Oil filters
  • Catalytic convertors
  • Wheels, tyres

What will you do with the scheduled waste extracted?

Scrap vehicles and all scheduled waste extracted from them should be managed in compliance with the guidelines from the Department of Malaysia.

As an DOE-licensed automotive treatment facility (AATF), Car Medic holds a waste’s carrier license that proves permits us to manage scheduled wastes.

To manage the waste, all licensed waste handlers utilise an online portal called eSWIS that monitors the transferring of scheduled waste from waste generators to waste collectors electronically.

As per the guidelines from DOE in accordance to the requirements of Regulation 8, Regulation 9 and Regulation 10 of the Environmental Quality (Scheduled Wastes) Regulations 2005, our methods of handling waste include and are not limited to:

  • Properly packaging, labelling and storing scheduled waste according to their characteristics, in a manner suitable for handling, storage and transportation
  • Safely storing waste in regularly maintained storage areas that meet the design and construction criteria as guided by DOE
  • Ensuring scheduled wastes are delivered to and received at licensed premises for treatment, disposal or recovery of material of product from scheduled wastes
  • Ensuring that wastes are not stored in our premises for more than 180 days and do not exceed 20 metric tonnes

Authorised automotive treatment facilities have proved that they meet and maintain these practices and are therefore the right people whom you should go to legally scrap your car/ELVs.
